In the past, financial services were almost always associated with banks. Saving money, transferring funds, applying for loans, and making payments were all activities carried out through banking institutions. Today, technological advancements have made many of these activities easier to access through digital devices.

Payments can now be made through apps, investments can be accessed online, and financing needs come with more options. These changes have contributed to the growth of financial technology, or fintech.

Although both operate in the financial sector, banks and fintech companies have different functions and approaches.

What Is the Difference Between Fintech and Banks?

The most fundamental difference lies in their functions and focus.

Fintech uses technology to provide, develop, or improve financial services. Its scope is broad, ranging from digital payments and financing to investments and various technology-based financial management solutions.

Fintech companies also generally adopt a digital-first approach, allowing many service processes to be carried out through digital platforms. However, this does not necessarily mean fintech is better than banks. Both serve different purposes and can complement each other.

Meanwhile, banks play a broader role within the financial system. Banks collect funds from the public and channel them back into the economy, including in the form of credit. They also provide various services such as savings accounts, fund transfers, payments, cards, and other financial products.

Digital banks are still banks, while fintech is part of a broader ecosystem that leverages technology to deliver financial solutions through a digital approach.

Why Is Fintech Growing So Rapidly?

The growth of fintech is closely connected to changing consumer habits. Today, many everyday activities can be done through smartphones, from shopping to booking transportation.

Expectations toward financial services have also changed. Users want services that are faster, more practical, easily accessible, and tailored to their needs.

Technology allows processes that previously required multiple steps to become simpler and more efficient. It also creates opportunities for more specialized financial solutions designed to address specific user needs.

For individuals and businesses alike, the growing variety of financial services provides more options. However, having more choices also means users need a better understanding of the products they use and the risks involved.

Banks and Fintech: Competition or Collaboration?

The relationship between banks and fintech does not always have to be viewed as a competition.

Banks have experience, infrastructure, an established customer base, and an important role within the financial system. Fintech companies, meanwhile, bring innovation, technology, and new approaches to addressing evolving user needs.

The two may compete in certain areas, but they also have opportunities to collaborate. Partnerships between financial institutions and technology companies can create services that are more efficient, accessible, and relevant to people's needs.

Therefore, the development of the financial industry is not always about bank vs. fintech, but about how different players within the financial ecosystem can complement one another.

Choose Based on Your Needs, Not Just Convenience

There is no single financial service that is right for everyone. Banks and fintech companies each have their own functions and advantages.

Before using a financial service, it is important to understand the product being offered, verify the provider's legality and licensing, consider the associated fees, understand the risks, and make sure the service matches your financial needs and capabilities.

In today's digital financial era, financial literacy is not only about understanding how to manage money, but also about understanding the technology and services used to manage it.

As part of the digital financial ecosystem, MEKAR believes that technological development should go hand in hand with greater financial literacy and inclusion, enabling people to use financial services more wisely and responsibly.
